How much salt is in the ocean?
Posted: November 22, 2008 Filed under: Ocean 9 Comments »The amount of salt in the ocean, known as salinity, is a measure of the of the amount of salt (in grams) dissolved in 1000 grams of water. So, the amount is expressed as parts per thousands.
Refractometers are a tool used to measure the amount of salinity in the ocean.
The salinity in the ocean is approximately 32 to 35 parts per thousand.
In estuaries where the ocean mixes with freshwater the amount of salt is less.

Those number are FAR too low.
Using numbers I found online:
With 1,386,000,000 cubic kilometers of water worldwide (97% of which is in the oceans) at 32-35 grams of salt / 1000 grams of ocean water that comes to something like 44,769,186 cubic kilometers of salt!
